Cal Fire Burning Through Its Budget

Cal Fire has already spent $64 million …which is close to what it spent all of last year and well on its way to going over its $93 million.

H.D. Palmer with the Department of Finance says if that happens -and he expects it will- the state will make emergency appropriations and pay for the extra costs out of the state's reserve, "We try to budget our fire suppression budget on a three-year average, so what's it been like for the last three years.  Some years, it's going to be light. Two years ago, we spent about $70 million on it.  Five years ago, we spent $370 million.  So, it's going to vary from year to year. "

The state's fire season typically gets really busy in September and October.  That's when hot and dry Santa Ana winds pick up in the southern part of the state and give firefighters fits.
