Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento has isolated more than 20 infants in the past two weeks.  They were discovered to have the drug-resistant MRSA bacteria on their skin. 

Dr. Stephen Butler says the babies' doctors will have to use special antibiotics to treat them should the babies develop an infection, "This is going to be life as we go forth and live it in the future -more resistant bacteria or "bugs" as we say from the use of these big antibiotics that we've used for many years."

The babies were moved into separate rooms to avoid exposing premature babies to the bug.   The hospital says all of the babies are fine. Two with conjunctivitis were treated with topical ointment.

The children did not have the bacteria when they went into the hospital and the hospital does not know how they were exposed.

Butler says a thorough cleaning of the facilities seems to have stopped the spread of the bacteria.   

Normal hand washing is the only known way to prevent it from spreading.
