Oak Park Welcomes Development

Three formerly-blighted sections of Oak Park are now in the process of being redeveloped as part of a $12 million project.

A demolition crew pulled the final remnants of an abandoned blue building down on one of the lots on Tuesday.  The three lots are on or near the area known as the Triangle on 35th and Broadway.  They are scheduled to be made into rental, restaurant and retail space within the next 15 months.

Development in Oak Park has been hard to come by, but developer Ron Vrilakis says a relatively small previous project made him think he could do it again, "Just ten little houses in Oak Park -those homeowners have made all of the difference to this community.  They've all affected the neighborhood in different ways.  They gave me sort of the confidence to go forward and really the energy to keep fighting."

There was a worry $8 million in redevelopment funding for the project would be lost after California Governor Jerry Brown ordered all redevelopment agencies eliminated.  This is one of the last projects in the state to slip in under the wire.
