The state agency CalRecycle is loaning Carpet Collectors $2 million dollars. Company owner Ryan Bradford says he'll use the money to hire 30 new workers and buy new machinery.

"We're excited to get the new equipment up and running."

Some of the new shredding and filtering equipment will be used to turn carpets into products such as park benches, auto parts…even ground covering.
"A component of the carpet is sand and so the sand, some people use that in landscaping."
CalRecycle's Mark Oldfield says the loan will help free up landfill space.
"Currently, Carpet Collectors diverts about 8,000 tons of post-consumer carpet from landfills. This loan will enable the business to divert an additional 22,000 tons per year."
CalRecycle grants low-interest loans to help recycling businesses grow. Oldfield says the 4% interest rate charged to Carpet Collectors will cover the state's cost to administer the loan.
