The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the riot started at about 11:15 in the morning.

Twelve inmates were stabbed or slashed in the riot.  The Department of Corrections says officers tried non-lethal force to break it up, but also fired multiple rounds from a rifle.  One prisoner was shot.

The injured were taken to either local trauma or intensive care units.

Sac Metro Fire responded to the first call of a riot and shooting -15 minutes after it started.  The department sent at least a dozen ambulances.

New Folsom's official name is the California State Prison-Sacramento.  It was built in 1986 and holds more than 2600 inmates.  The Department of  Corrections says many are classified maximum security.

Prisoners also rioted at New Folsom in March of this year and December of last year.
