It's called the "Golden State Street Rod Nationals" and it's at Cal Expo. Tom Wilkerson drove his custom car here all the way from Kansas City.

"It's an old '47 flat-head motor in a '32 Ford Roadster."

More than 1,600 specialty cars will be entered into various contests. They're all pre-1981 vehicles renovated on the outside with flashy paint and shiny chrome...and modified on the inside…

"They're putting a brand new motor in 'em, they're putting a brand new up-to-date transmission..."

The cars range in value from $10,000 to $100,000. But Wilkerson says the love of restoring old cars is about more than that...

"When I work in the garage, I know in my heart that I'm going to be driving for days on end for every hour I put in on that car. That's my time away from the fax machine and the phones."

The street rods are on display at Cal Expo now through Sunday afternoon.
