The ground-breaking at Sacramento Charter High School was symbolic. But one day a patch of Bermuda grass at the school may blossom with crops and flowers like the Edible Schoolyard begun by Alice Waters in Berkeley. After the ceremony, Waters said a garden goes with any curriculum.
WATERS: "This becomes the lab for every class, so if you have the science class, you come out here and you have your class, taking a sample of soil. Or maybe you're doing a history class, and so you're planting the seeds of the country you're studying."
An Edible Schoolyard is a garden, a cooking lab and a student-run cafeteria. Ninety Sacramento High students have already signed up. The name of their garden project is "Edible Sac High."
