The Altamont Commuter Express or ACE train ferries valley commuters to jobs in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.ACE is building a new 61 million dollar maintenance station in Stockton.

Thomas Reeves from ACE says an 11 million dollar grant from high speed rail funds will help build new tracks and other improvements.

REEVES:  "There's also going to be a platform where passengers will be able to wait for the train, a pedestrian walkway because currently we have a lot of passengers who are walking across the bridge and it's not safe."

Stockton will be a future hub for high speed rail, but it will need connections such as Amtrak and ACE. And Reeves says ridership is up significantly on ACE.

REEVES: "Right now we are looking at an average ridership of 3,800 a day that is roughly  a 12 percent increase over last year."

Reeves says perhaps because of high gas prices recent ridership has increased to 4,200.
