A $1.7 million dollar grant from the Department of Water Resources will pay for a new cell phone tower and hundreds of portable radios.
Chuck Parker is in Sacramento County's Department of Technology. He says better communication is needed for first responders in the Delta, "In the boot of the county, each county has its own radio system and they're not necessarily set up to be able to communicate with one another."
Parker says radios will be pre-positioned for emergency crews coming into the region.
The cell phone tower will likely be built on Twitchell Island southwest of Sacramento.
