In a statement, Safeway says the wages and benefits package allows the company to "compete successfully in the future."

The United Food and Commercial Workers' Local 8 says the contract provides affordable healthcare for workers and retirees.  Safeway agreed to fund the union's health benefit plan.

UFCW also represents striking workers at Raley's.   In the company's last-and-final contract offer made in writing to the union, Raley's asks for healthcare benefits to expire when retirees turn 65 and become Medicare eligible.
