George Cline with the National Weather Service says if you're heading to higher elevations today you should be prepared for several inches of snow on the roadways.

CLINE: "Early in the morning we're looking at some snow in the mountains there in the Tahoe region.  We actually do have a snow advisory into early Wednesday morning, after that the snow showers start to decrease."

Cal Trans says drivers should have chains with them in case a chain control is in order.  Earlier construction on Highway 80 is wrapped up for the winter, and all lanes should be open.

Officer Adrian Quintero with the California Highway Patrol says the CHP will set checkpoints over the holiday to make sure people aren't driving under the influence.

QUINTERO: "People need to make a plan, have a plan in place before they start consuming alcohol, once you start consuming alcohol, its too late."

From Thanksgiving day through the weekend the weather should be clear and mostly sunny in the Tahoe region.
