Sacramento's winter sanctuary program says it's raised the money to give 100 homeless people a place to sleep each night.

Wells Fargo Bank donated $50,000 to the Sacramento Steps Forward non-profit that runs the shelter program. The donation puts the organization over its $150,000 goal for the winter.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says the non-profit provides shelter more efficiently than the City and County were able to at Cal Expo, "Nearly 100 people on any given night from November through March will receive a warm place to sleep and a meal to eat at over 25 local churches, synagogues and mosques on a rotating basis.  "

The shelter program is for single adults.  The City and County of Sacramento also provide $250,000 for motel vouchers and beds for families and vulnerable adults.  The non-profit reports a 51-percent decrease in chronic homelessness since 2007, but says about half of the 3,000 homeless in the county do not have shelter on any given night.
