For the 8th Amgen Tour of California the race will travel for the first time from south to north starting at the host city of Escondido.
Mayor Sam Abed beamed with pride at the announcement.
ABED: "What an exciting day for our city, we should be honored to have Escondido not only on the national stage but on the worldwide stage."
Tour Director Kristin Bachochin says in Northern California the route will include San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and one of toughest stages from Livermore to the top of Mount Diablo at 3,800 feet.
BACHOCHIN: "Mt. Diablo is one of the most epic climbs that has incorporated to the Amgen Tour of California so to have the opportunity to finish on top of it is going to be pretty phenomenal."
Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto served as host cities in the past but no valley cities were picked this year.
The race is 750 miles long over 8 days starting May 12th.
