Marathon Organizers Say Rain Will Not Dampen Their Party (updated with road closures)

About 50,000 people typically line the route of the California International Marathon. But the event's 30th race is expected to have atypical weather.

The marathon's media coordinator John Schumacher is the marathon's media coordinator.  He says it's rare that the race gets any rain, but he's confident people will still turn out on Sunday for the party that stretches 26.2 miles, "A lot of great spots to watch the race, you know: Old town Fair Oaks, Loehmann's Plaza's gonna have a great wall party going on at the 20-mile mark.  Just a lot of good stuff going on.  Obviously if the weather is bad, that might affect the numbers a little bit. But, there's a lot of places along the course to grab your hot beverage, put your hat on and watch people go by."

It should be a loud party, as 34 musical groups are scheduled to play along the route. Some 9,100 runners are expected to start at the Folsom Dam and are hoping to finish at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

Schumacher says the race is popular among runners because of the atmosphere, but also because it's slightly downhill -which allows them to qualify more easily for the Boston Marathon.
