Soon after California's new lawmakers took their oath of office, Democratic Assembly Speaker John Pérez spoke directly to the new Republican lawmakers.

PEREZ: "I want to state clearly that your voice is welcome. Your contributions are desired and your active service is needed."

Assembly minority leader Connie Conway says she hopes Democrats are as good as their words... and that they'll show restraint in using their supermajority.

CONWAY: "I appreciate Speaker Perez reaching out across the aisle and I'm sure he does it with good intentions. It is easy from the seat when you have total control, but I still appreciate the fact that he acknowledged my colleagues."

She says millions of Californians who believe in fiscal restraint voted Republicans into office. Conway says that shouldn't be discounted.
