Fiscal Cliff & California Taxes President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner are still negotiating terms to avoid taking the country over the fiscal cliff, but the deadline is drawing closer with little progress to show. If the nation were to go over the fiscal cliff, California has a lot to lose. Californians would pay the highest income taxes in the country and the state would most likely plunge back into recession for the first two quarters of 2013. Here to explain what would happen to California if the country goes over the fiscal cliff is Jason Sisney, Deputy Legislative Analyst of California, and Gerald Prante, an economics professor at Lynchburg College in Virginia, who recently published a paper about the fiscal cliff's effect on taxes in each state.
