San Joaquin Regional Transit District will add two electric buses to its service in Stockton by the end of January.
The buses will be the first electric buses in operation in Northern California.
The transit district's Paul Rapp says most of the current bus fleet are cleaner hybrid diesel, but the electric buses will be even cleaner and cheaper to run.
RAPP: "If you take a look at our hybrids, they're running between 4-6 miles per gallon for fuel economy. To make an equivalent economy for the electric buses they are about 25-27 miles per gallon."
Rapp says the electric buses don't take much time to recharge.
RAPP "The bus can do a one hour loop with as little as a five minute charge, we plan to have the bus lay over 5 or 10 minutes between loops, a real quick charge to get back up to full speed."
The buses are part of a pilot program paid for with a two and a half million dollar state grant.
