The San Joaquin Valley Air District board meets on Wednesday to hear proposed rules to clean up the air by 2019.
The district already has numerous no burn days, in which fireplace use is banned in the winter.
The district's Samir Sheikh says the new rules could double the number of no burn days...in Modesto for example, the curtailment days could go from 36 to 74.
SHEIKH: "With the conditions we see in the winter you could see a significant increase in the curtailment days, it would just change over the future as the air quality gets better."
Sheikh says cleaner air will save lives.
SHEIKH: "We're talking about avoiding for example 600 premature deaths that would otherwise occur on a yearly basis."
If approved after a period of public comment, the new rules would go into effect in 2017.
