Officer Pete Mann with the California Highway Patrol in Truckee says if you have to go over the Sierra for Christmas, now is the time to do it, "If you can get out tonight or tomorrow morning early, I would burn the extra vacation time at work and make your travel plans accordingly. If you are going to try and venture through the storm, make sure you take the time and practice putting on your chains beforehand whether it's in the garage or in your driveway. Do it somewhere nice and warm before you have to do it for real laying in the snow up here."
There could be two-to-six feet of snow at Lake Tahoe by Monday. The forecast is for clearing on Christmas day with light snow returning the day after Christmas.
The Sacramento International Airport says the storm shouldn't affect takeoffs or landings at the airport, but blizzards in Chicago and the Midwest might delay flights. The airport suggests calling your airline before you leave home.
