For the first time since the recession began to cut deeply into department employment, the Sacramento Police academy is taking applications. Officer Kathy Lester says she expects at least a thousand applicants to go through the process in stages -the first of which is a written test.
"A lot of it has to do with writing and English grammar because people don't realize how important that is to being a police officer is how to be able to express yourself."
Lester says the department will hold more than half a dozen events between now and July for people interested in applying. She expects about 40 people to go through the academy in July.
Most of the academy training takes place at its facility at McClellan Business Park.
