The Public Policy Institute of California poll puts Brown's approval rating at 51 percent. That's the highest since he took office two years ago.

According to the survey, more than two-thirds of Californians support Brown's budget, and 75 percent like his plan to direct more funding to schools with more low-income students and English language learners.

Californians are also feeling better about lawmakers. Forty-one percent approve of the job the legislature's doing; the highest in five years.

Californians are looking for some action this year, too.  Fifty-seven percent expect the Governor and lawmakers to work together and accomplish a lot. That's up 13 points from last year.

And for the first time since 2007, a majority - albeit a slim one, at 51 percent - feel California is headed in the right direction. The PPIC poll was conducted mid-month.
