Little Hoover Commission on State Parks The Little Hoover Commission released its latest report on the state of the California State Park system. The report criticizes management of the 280-park system that includes river trails, desert, historical sites, beaches and museums and recommends that a new operating model be developed. We'll talk with the commission's executive director, Stuart Drown, about the report and what can be done to keep one of California's greatest public institutions from falling apart.

Alternative Education: Reggio Emilia We continue our occasional series on alternative education by looking at a teaching method coming from Italy. The Reggio Emilia style focuses on preschool and primary education and puts children in control over what they are learning by allowing them to physically explore material items and their surroundings. The teaching method emphasizes the importance of learning by touching, moving, listening, seeing and hearing. Lori Hammond is the academic director and founder of Peregrine Elementary School in Davis that uses the Reggio Emilia teaching style. She joins us to discuss the alternative learning style.

Martin Beal Big-band swing and Irish folk aren't two musical styles you'd presume to find in one singer's musical repertoire. Which is part of what makes Martin Beal such an interesting "jazz" singer. His masterful vocals are as comfortable crooning "The Way You Look Tonight" as they are belting "Old Danny Boy." Beal is releasing his new album "Smile" Wednesday at Red Lion Woodlake Hotel in Sacramento and he is encouraging guests to dress in 1940's period attire to honor the jazz era his new album is a tribute to.
