Members of the Health and Human Services Network of California say recent cuts to CalWORKS have resulted in fewer people getting less money for shorter periods of time. Magali Sanchez-Hall is with the network.
SANCHEZ-HALL:"...And I'm a recipient of CalWORKs. We're getting only 638 for a family of three. Come on! Who can live with $638 dollars a month?"
The advocates said the state no longer faces a budget deficit, and new corporate taxes could help rebuild social services.
But H.D. Palmer in the California Department of Finance says the Governor doesn't intend to restore past cuts.
PALMER:"If we want to continue on a path towards structural stability and balance, we can't undo the reductions that we've made in the past."
The Governor's budget this year does add $143 million to the CalWORKS budget to help recipients find jobs, but it will not increase monthly cash assistance.
