Insight: Infill Zoning / U-Nite / New Performing Arts Alliance / Kushman by the Bottle

Infill Zoning - Sacramento is a city that seemed to be growing ever outward until the recession hit. Now city planners are starting to look within for answers to questions of future growth. Sacramento is in the midst of updating its zoning code to make developing homes and businesses in downtown faster and easier. We'll discuss the city's plans for infill and we'll explore how the entire region benefits from more development in Sacramento's' urban core. Mayor of West Sacramento and Member of Sacramento Area Council of Governments' Board of Directors Christopher Cabaldon joins us with the planning director for Sacramento's new zoning codes, David Kwong.

U-Nite - Last year, Sacramento State began a collaboration with The Crocker Art Museum called U-Nite. It featured more than 40 faculty members and students showing their work, as well as a variety of musical performances, and it drew 1,800 people to the museum. The second annual U-Nite is this Thursday, and again it's featuring the art - visual and performance - of Sac State faculty and students. We'll talk with about it with Rika Nelson, Manager of Public Programs at The Crocker; Elaine Gale, Sac State professor and founder of U-Nite; Lorelei Bayne, Sac State dance coordinator and Vice Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance; and percussionist Dominic Garcia.

New Performing Arts Alliance - Sacramento's classical music institutions took a hard hit in the recession. The Sacramento Opera and Philharmonic had to merge recently to keep their doors open, and it's beginning to look more and more like a good move. The newly-merged organization has landed a heavy hitter from the opera and symphony community in Europe to take charge of revamping the opera and philharmonic here. Robert Tannenbaum will take the reins of the Sacramento Region Performing Arts Alliance in July.

Kushman by the Bottle - Capital Public Radio's resident wine expert (and occasional guest host) Rick Kushman talks about the different counties and varietals - hint, it's not just Amador County and zinfandels - that make up the foothill wine region. We'll hear about Barbera, Syrah and Viognier to name a few and look ahead to El Dorado County's Passport weekends, which starts Saturday.
