The planetarium is in the form of a large inflatable igloo and is located in Pollock Pines.
Dave Gordon is Superintendent of the Sacramento County Office of Education. He says the facility offers students the chance to study forestry conservation by day and constellations by night, "For many of our urban kids, it's the first time they've ever seen a forest or a lake or a strand of trees or looked at the sky. Because, as you know, we can't see much of the sky with our light pollution down in Sacramento."
Gordon says eight-thousand elementary school children will spend a week each year at the Pollock Pines site on Sly Park Road.
The inflatable planetarium was funded by a $20,000 grant from Aerojet's Gencorp Foundation.
