The animal shelter in Tracy is more than 30 years old.

The city's population has increased to 85,000 and the pet population has increased with that.

Now the dilapidated shelter can no longer house the 24-hundred dogs and cats that arrive each year.

Animal Services Supervisor Ben Miller says the present shelter  has only 20 dog kennels.

MILLER: "The new shelter is going to give us a 50 percent increase at least in holding capacity.

The new shelter will cover 6,000 square feet, almost 3 times the size of the present facility.

Miller says a second phase will later increase that to 12,000 square feet.

MILLER:   "We want to add on to it as Tracy grows."

The new animal shelter is scheduled to be completed in the fall of next year
