Health Care Reporter

Kelley Weiss covers health issues around California and at the state Capitol. Her stories also air regularly on National Public Radio. She's been covering the health beat since 2006 and has reported on policy and access issues, mental health and how culture and health intersect.

She's won multiple awards including a national Edward R. Murrow investigative reporting award for a series on a hidden world of illegal prescription drugs sold at swap meets and botanicas. This series also won first place in the 2008 Association of Health Care Journalist's radio award contest. Her work has also been recognized by the National Association on Mental Illness and Investigative Reporters and Editors for a series on abuse and neglect in Missouri's mental health system that uncovered patient deaths and money mismanagement. She has been awarded health reporting fellowships from the Association of Health Care Journalists and the USC Annenberg School of Communication.

Before making the switch to radio, Weiss was a freelance writer and photographer for The Kansas City Star and then worked as a staff writer for a local newspaper. Weiss then took a job as a health reporter and talk show co-host at NPR affiliate KCUR in her hometown of Kansas City.

Kelley has a journalism degree from the University of Kansas. She's always looking for interesting local eateries and has an obsession with South Indian dosas. Other than that, Kelley likes to water ski, take in great art and explore California's many natural wonders.
