Logging Okayed For Bohemian Club Land

The club owns a grove near the Russian River. It’s a men-only society that counts politicians and celebrities among its members.

Bohemian Club officials say the plan will help reduce wildfire risks.

But Rick Coats with the environmental group Forest Unlimited disagrees. He believes the club is more interested in making money because he says cutting the large redwoods will not decrease fire danger.

“In fact over a period of years the brush will grow back first and the result will be a higher fire danger. And there are several endangered species at risk here. First of all there’s potential for Marbled Murrelet habitat in a grove. There is of course endangered Coho and Steelhead.”

The state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has granted the Bohemian Club a permit to log on more than 2,000 acres. The approval essentially removes government oversight of the Bohemian Club's timber-harvesting practices for the next century.

Environmentalists say they plan to challenge the decision in court.
