A water treatment facility just downstream of the Truckee River sees a sudden spike of pollutants when the rodeo’s in town every June.

“We suspect that some of the livestock waste, some of it’s washed down possibly into the storm drain system which could make it’s way to the river."

That’s Don Penrose with the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. The agency is putting up $75,000 to build an on-site treatment system.

“It involves the construction of a structural control at the livestock event center grounds that would divert waste from penned livestock into the sanitary sewer system.”

…and avoid the threat of coli-form and other bacteria getting into the Truckee River.

The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority is also chipping in $10,000 for the project. And the City of Reno will put in $15,000 worth of staff time.
