The California Assembly has officially elected a new Speaker.
Los Angeles Democrat John Perez takes over the post soon and says he wants to change the state budget process.

Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley reports...
The freshman Assemblymember Perez (PAIR-es) officially begins serving as Speaker following a brief transition period with Karen Bass.
Bass is leaving the post because of term limits. Perez is vowing to change how the state budget is drafted.

He wants a budget worked out in the legislature rather than behind closed doors the way it is now...
Perez: “One of the ideas I have it taking us back to what was anticipated in our Constitution and what has historically been the way that most of our budgets have been done...”
Perez also wants to work more closely with local governments to create jobs in California.

Perez is the first openly gay man to serve as Assembly Speaker.

He got more votes for the job than did GOP Assemblymember Sam Blakeslee, who Republicans nominated.
