The company has been attempting for months to boost revenue at the money-losing store, one of the largest in the region, with no success. The closure will eliminate 144 full- and part-time positions, with employees receiving 60 days of pay. Some employees will also collect vacation pay and an extended severance package.
The announcement comes less than three weeks after the critical holiday shopping season, considered a make-or-break period for retailers. Sam’s Club, which owns the 136,000-square-foot building at The Promenade at Sacramento Gateway on North Freeway Boulevard, has not determined what will happen to the property. The company will refund memberships to those who request it and don’t want to travel to the five other Sam’s Clubs in the region.
