Overnight temperatures recently have dipped to the lower forties. And there have been some rain showers. The combination of the two sends even the most hardy of the homeless scurring for shelters.

Officials estimate that in the Modesto area there are some two thousand people who usually sleep outside. Those people are in danger of serious health problems or even death when its cold and wet. Like most shelters in the region the Modesto gospel mission has been filled beyond normal capacity since the cold spell settled over the valley.

Administrator Barbara Deatherage says no one is turned away.

“…even if we have to put a mat on the floor. Better a mat on the floor and the blanket than outside with the possibility of sub coming to the weather.”

Non-profit social service agencies such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill say when the weather turns chilly its a challenge providing the needy with coats.
