Gary Bird is a city a spokesman. He says the latest figure from the magnitude 6.5 temblor reflects damage to 240 buildings. That’s up from an original damage estimate of $14 million for 175 buildings.
Bird says plans are already underway to seek federal disaster relief.
“I am certain that we’ll be asking for federal assistance. And our Congressman Mike Thompson was here in town surveying the damage and he has stated his intent to assist us in seeking federal money to help us with repairs and recovery.”
Bird says officials are continuing to assess buildings, and he expects the damage estimate to climb even higher.
Saturday's quake sent about 30 people to emergency rooms, but only one was seriously injured. It was centered in the Pacific Ocean about 22 miles west of Ferndale.
