State Exports Up Slightly

But analysts say, relatively speaking, it’s only a slight gain. Jock O'Connell is the international trade adviser at the University of California Center Sacramento:

“U.S. exports during the same period were up over 11% while California exports nudged up barely 2%. It’s not really something to toast. What we’re seeing is a sluggish response in California to an upswing in demand for products from foreign customers.”

O’Connell says those customers are buying agricultural goods…as well as recyclable products such as scrap metal and waste paper.

The center's analysis, released Tuesday, was based on figures from the U.S. Commerce Department.

The figures also show that exports from the Port of Oakland are growing faster than exports from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
