The 72-member task force rushed to Travis early Thursday morning. But a backlog at the Port-au-Prince airport means the team has had to wait.

Captain Jim Doucette with the Sacramento Fire Department says team members are eager to help save lives and are bracing for the emotional toll.

“I don’t know if they could ever be totally prepared for something like that. I mean, you’ve seen the pictures like everybody else has. And Haiti’s such a poor country to begin with, there’s so much poverty there. But with this going on it’s got to be really bad. They’ll do the best they can and hopefully they’ll all come home and be better off for it.”

Doucette says most of the task force is made up of local firefighters. He says the team could be in Haiti for several weeks. Search-and-rescue teams from Southern California have also been deployed to Haiti.
