The campaigns for the two Republican candidates for governor are exchanging barbs over a controversial email today (Monday).

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner says the message sent by Meg Whitman’s top consultant tries to get him to drop out of the race.

Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley reports...
Poizner says the e-mail sent by Whitman’s political adviser Mike Murphy (quote): “applies improper pressure on him to end his campaign."

Poizner says the email states that Whitman is willing to use her personal fortune to defeat him...
Poizner “The e-mail had a crystal clear message: Steve Poizner don’t file...get out of the race...or else. And, the or else part was if you don’t get out then we will spend 40-million dollars...quote...tearing you up and damaging you...”
Poizner has asked the FBI, U-S Attorney’s office and State Attorney General to investigate.

In a response from Whitman’s campaign, Murphy says Poizner’s allegations are “ridiculous.”

Murphy says the email was meant to encourage Poizner to consider running for U-S Senate in 2012.

The former ebay CEO Whitman had a nearly 30-point lead over Poizner in the latest Field Poll.
