Sierra College Bracing For Cuts

Trustees of the community college in Rocklin are scheduled to vote on the cuts Tuesday afternoon.

Sierra College President Leo Chavez says the campus is getting fewer state dollars – $7 million to be exact. And he’s already worried about additional cuts next year.

“…and we don’t know how we’re going to handle those. We’re only dealing with what’s happened this year. This is compounded by the fact that because UC and CSU are restricting enrollments, we’re seeing unprecedented demand for our own services…and we’re having to restrict access.”

Trustees will vote on eliminating more than 35 faculty, management and classified employee jobs at the community college. They’ll also decide whether to get rid of several instructional programs in automotive technology, construction and agriculture.

About 20,000 students attend Sierra College. And Sierra’s not the only local community college dealing with budget cuts…so are American River, Sacramento City and Cosumnes.
