During the public testimony, Anna Doan told council members the designation brings pride to the local Vietnamese community.
“It also carries appreciation and gratitude from the younger generation to the older generation who came here as refugees and immigrants and have worked very hard to build a better future.”
Vietnamese-Americans filled the audience at Tuesday’s meeting. And Councilman Ray Tretheway – a veteran of the Vietnam War – addressed them when he declared his support for the resolution.
“In 1969 I was in Vietnam. And like many people in Vietnam, I never knew why. But tonight now I know why I was there. I’ve heard from your very words. And they’re about opportunity, tolerance, respect – your willingness to build a legacy with us in America.”
Next week, Sacramento County Supervisors will vote on designating another half-mile section of Stockton Boulevard outside the city limits as “Little Saigon”.
