Republican State Senator Abel Maldonado is one step closer to becoming California Lieutenant Governor.

A state Senate committee today (Wednesday) approved his nomination.

Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley reports...
The Senate Rules Committee voted four to zero in favor of Maldonado’s nomination.

Senate Democratic leader Darrell Steinberg voted “yes” even though he said disagrees with Maldonado on some political issues.

Maldonado became emotional during his opening statements to the committee.

After the hearing he said he’s not embarrassed that he broke down and shed a tear while talking about his parents who emigrated from Mexico...
Maldonado:   “Can you imagine you have a migrant field worker who crossed the border in 1964 to see his son confirmed before a senate body and it now goes to the floor? It’s amazing!...”
Maldonado’s nomination now goes before the full senate for a vote.
He also needs approval in the State Assembly before he gets the job.

Lawmakers must act on his nomination in less than three weeks or he automatically becomes Lieutenant Governor.
