Like a lot of other school districts around California, Davis Joint Unified is coping with less state funding and facing a budget gap, $5.6 million to be exact.
And Thursday night, the board of education will talk about potential staff reductions. The meeting starts at 7 PM in the Community Chambers at City Hall.
District spokeswoman Pamela Mari says they may be able to save some jobs by offering generous retirement incentives.
“So for example, if you have a larger than normal group of retirements and that retirement is an appropriate thing for those people, than that allows us to reduce the number of young persons and less senior persons that we actually have to layoff.”
The board of education is also looking at going to a six-period day for seventh-graders. Right now, those students have seven-periods.
A final vote on the layoffs is scheduled to happen on February 18th.
