Johnson’s latest initiative would still shift control of the city’s day-to-day responsibilities from the city manager to the mayor. But the new plan removes the power to fire key personnel...among other things.

It was a hot topic at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

One of those speaking in favor of the proposal was Joshua Wood. He’s with a trade group that represents contractors, architects and engineers.

“Every company needs a boss. There needs to be someone who’s held accountable – helps companies run better, helps governments run better. And we just hope that you guys will work together and bring forward a solution that’ll be the best thing that we think there is for this region.”

But Councilwoman Sandy Sheedy said the new plan needs scrutiny.

“This isn’t an emergency. The sky’s not going to fall down on our heads if it isn’t on the ballot in June. I think the entire city is just suffering from a case of strong mayor fatigue and I think we need to let it go.”

Last month, Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster ruled Johnson’s original initiative was too sweeping to be considered a simple charter amendment.
