The district faces a $6 million budget deficit. That’s on top of $18 million in cuts the district has made in the past two-years.
School board members will discuss the school closure plan tonight. District spokeswoman Heidi Van Zant says they’re looking at closing one of three elementary schools: Bannon Creek, Jefferson or Natomas Park.
“We are highly sensitive to the pain that this is causing for our school communities and very aware of the emotional impacts of closing an elementary school. We are heartened that this will be a temporary closure of about three to five years.”
Closing a school will save the district about $330,000 a year. The school board is scheduled to make a final decision on which school to close on March 10th.
The district has until March 15th to send lay-off notices to teachers. The Natomas Teacher’s Association says it expects about 70 members to receive them.
