It’s called the “Tall Wonders Giraffe Habitat” and visitors will be able to walk up a platform and stand eye-to-eye with the animals.
Zoo Director Mary Healy says they’re still about $50,000 shy of paying for the new exhibit. But she’s banking on it bringing in more visitors.
“There’s quite a large viewing deck and then in the future we will be offering supervised feeding opportunities. It’s a whole new way of looking at the giraffes so we’re really hoping that this will pique the interest of people who haven’t been to the zoo for a long time.”
The new exhibit is roomier, heated and made of block bricks. It replaces an unheated wooden barn that the zoo’s three female giraffes lived in. Healy says she hopes to bring in a male giraffe and start a breeding program.
Thursday’s ceremony will be held at noon.
