Battle Over Lt. Gov. Nominee Takes Bizarre Turn

The battle between Governor Schwarzenegger and the Assembly over his choice for Lieutenant Governor just got even more bizarre. Schwarzenegger now says he’ll withdraw, then re-submit his candidate.

Yesterday the State Assembly voted not to approve Schwarzenegger’s nominee for Lieutenant Governor, GOP Senator Abel Maldonado. The 80-member house voted 37 to 35. Assembly Democrats said Maldonado was out because he didn’t get yes vote from a majority of the Assembly. But the Governor said Maldonado’s in because he didn’t get a no vote from a majority of the Assembly. It looked like the issue would end up in the courts. But today Schwarzenegger announced he would withdraw Maldonado’s name, then promptly re-nominate him. The Governor says that will avoid a court battle. It also sets a new 90-day clock for the legislature to take another vote on Maldonado. If they do nothing, he gets the job
