The battle between Governor Schwarzenegger and the Assembly over his choice for Lieutenant Governor just got even more bizarre. Schwarzenegger now says he’ll withdraw, then re-submit his candidate.

Yesterday the State Assembly voted not to approve Schwarzenegger’s nominee for Lieutenant Governor, GOP Senator Abel Maldonado. The 80-member house voted 37 to 35. Assembly Democrats said Maldonado was out because he didn’t get yes vote from a majority of the Assembly. But the Governor said Maldonado’s in because he didn’t get a no vote from a majority of the Assembly. It looked like the issue would end up in the courts. But today Schwarzenegger announced he would withdraw Maldonado’s name, then promptly re-nominate him. The Governor says that will avoid a court battle. It also sets a new 90-day clock for the legislature to take another vote on Maldonado. If they do nothing, he gets the job
