Nearly 31-thousand people have applied for the 14 spots on the redistricting commission. Most of the applicants have met the basic requirements to continue on in the selection process. They now have until early April to submit a more detailed application. A three-person panel from the State Auditor’s office will then narrow the pool down to the 60 most qualified, and with the help of the legislative leaders, that will get whittled down to the final 14. That group will draw the legislative and board of equalization districts using census data.  A majority of the applicants are white men, causing some critics to question how well the panel will represent a diverse California.
