State lawmakers are calling on UC San Diego to investigate a party where students were encouraged to dress and act likeAfrican-American stereotypes.
Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley reports...
The party was promoted as the quote “Compton Cookout.”

The invitations said it was intended to celebrate Black History Month and party goers were encouraged to wear baggy jeans and gold capped teeth and eat fried chicken and watermelon.

That’s angered state lawmakers who are calling on UC San Diego to take action. Democratic Asssemblymember Isadore Hall of Los Angeles says it’s time to hold the party organizers accountable...
Hall: “The actions of these individuals are unacceptable. It is racist. It is wrong. And, we stand here today to tell all Californians we will not put up with it...”
Lawmakers say UC San Diego’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity organized the party.

But the fraternity’s chapter president has denied that in published reports.

Meantime, UC San Diego officials say they are looking into the party which was held off campus last weekend.

Next Wednesday, UC San Diego is holding seminars known as a “teach-in” in hopes of improving race relations on campus.
