The Olivera Egg Ranch can house more than 700,000 caged chickens. It’s in the town of French Camp. Chicken waste gets pumped into a lagoon at the site.

Peter Brant is an attorney with the Humane Society of the United States which filed a lawsuit on behalf of ten residents.

“We visited this facility. You can see from the road it has a 16.5 acre lake of liquefied manure. And there are residential houses within a few hundred feet of that. So it was just abysmal conditions.”

A judge ruled Thursday that Olivera had "spoiled evidence" by dredging that lagoon and imposed sanctions. Residents say that gives them hope that the ordeal will come to an end.

Olivera is also facing six permit violations.

The farm's owner says the lawsuit is without merit.
