Stiffer Fines For Talking/Texting While Driving?

It’s already illegal to gab on a hand-held phone or text while driving in California. But one state lawmaker wants to make it even more expensive if you get caught.

Democratic State Senator Joe Simitian says state data show the state’s bans on talking and texting while driving are helping to reduce accidents. But he says when it comes to compliance, there’s room for improvement. That’s why he’s introduced legislation to hike the fines. Right now chatting on a hand-held phone behind the wheel will cost you twenty dollars the first time and fifty thereafter. Simitian would increase that to fifty and 100 dollars respectively. And texting while driving would go up to 100 dollars. Those are the base fines, too – actual tickets are usually higher due to local fees. Drivers would also face a point on their driving record. And Simitian wants to apply the talking and texting bans to bicyclists, too.
