California Chief Justice: Courts No Luxury

Chief Justice Ronald George told lawmakers that the courts may have borne more than their fair share of California’s budget struggle. He says all courthouses are closed one day a month – and that shouldn’t continue past this summer. George says caseloads are up as resources dwindle and new judges are needed in the future. He’s asking lawmakers to keep the courts in mind as they craft a difficult budget:

“One simple truth prevails. Courts are not a luxury to be funded in good times and ignored in bad times. Justice cannot only be available only when it is convenient to pay for it.”

George says more than six dozen positions have been cut, more remain unfilled and he and other judges and justices have taken voluntary salary cuts.
