Sacramento County Considers Tattoo Ordinance

Right now, there’s nothing on the books…either statewide or locally…when it comes to regulating the more than 250 body art facilities in Sacramento County.

“So without those enforceable requirements there really is not much we can do to prevent any kind of backstreet body artist from practicing.”

That’s John Rogers. He heads the county’s Environmental Health Division which is proposing the ordinance. It would require body art shops to follow proper sanitation procedures and to vaccinate their workers for Hepatitis B.

“The ordinance is intended to protect the customers as well as the artists from any infectious diseases.”

And that’s okay with at least one body art business owner – Michael Hare of The Exotic Body in East Sacramento.

“There’s more regulation on someone that cuts your nails then someone that’s going to tattoo you or pierce you which could be a lot more traumatic and have a lot more consequences. I think this is very long overdue.”

A public workshop on the proposed ordinance will be held Thursday afternoon. The issue will ultimately go before the Board of Supervisors later this year.
